Welcome to GoMath!
I'm sure you have all noticed what a different math program we have this year. The district is jumping ahead of the pack and getting our students more prepared to meet the requirements of the common core; and to use their math skills in the real world. All fourth grade students in the district are receiving the same math instruction as your student.
For most of us, this is a new approach. We were taught math using simple algorithms (a math problem with an easy route to a solution). For example, with the chapter we've been covering, most of you have wanted to show your student how to do a multiplication problem quickly using regrouping (or carrying as we learned it). Though that is a good way to do multiplication, the common core requires your students to be able to show many ways to multiply. This chapter has brought many new techniques to the students, and as they progress they can start to choose what is the best fit for them. I am excited about the depth of the GoMath program and how much stronger it will make our fourth graders in math.
Because of the confusion in the way the new math program is taught, I am posting a mini-lesson each night that will help you and your students to understand what was taught in class that day. Links to these mini-lessons are provided on the right side of the screen under Homework Videos. So take a minute, watch the lessons, and happy homeworking!
